Spring 2015 Kick-Off

IMG_0775IMG_0776The Spring Kick Off meeting took place this past Monday, January 26th. McKenna started the meeting with a presentation about our organization, followed by a short presentation from Jessica about the Grace Hopper conference. One of the new changes to WEECS this semester is the inclusion of general meetings which will occur every other Monday at 6:00pm in HEC 101 (to see future meeting dates, check out the calendar on our website). Immediately following the Monday general meetings will be Cookies and Code, where we invite students to bring their extracurricular coding projects, get help or help others.

Google Luncheon

The first month of Spring Semester is coming to a close. Earlier this month, Google recruiters visited UCF and held a special luncheon for Women in EECS. Most of the recruiters were former UCF graduates who entered the company full time after graduation. We talked about how each of them came to apply to Google, interview tips, and the importance of support programs in place for women in computing. After lunch, one of the Googlers took us through a demo of Cardboard. Google Cardboard is literally a piece of cardboard that can be assembled into eyewear that holds an Android smartphone. It allows the user to experience virtual reality using various apps in the Google Play store. Thanks to Google for being such a huge supporter of our organization!

Welcome Back Cookout

It was a beautiful day last Sunday at Lake Claire when six campus clubs came together for the Welcome Back Cookout.  This was our first multi-club event of the semester and it proved to be a great success.  Students from Women in EECS, IEEE, NOW, Hack@UCF, ASME, and Astronomy Society got the opportunity to mingle and learn more about other organizations that might interest them.

After a brief welcome speech from WEECS Events Director, Unika Cole, a representative from each organization spoke about the purpose and goals of their club and how to join.

Akash led our first ice breaker event of the day by asking everyone to throw their right shoe into a pile on the floor.  Then, each person picked up a shoe and introduced themself to the shoe’s owner.

The second ice breaker was led by WEECS President McKenna.

The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying hamburgers, hotdogs, snacks, and drinks. Thank you to everyone who was able to stop by.  We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Student Faculty Luncheon

On Wednesday, September 3rd, Women in EECS was delighted to hold the student-faculty luncheon, our first of several professional events this semester.  The purpose of this event is to allow students to chat one-on-one with female faculty from the College of Engineering and Computer Science about their experience being a female in computing/engineering academia.

We were honored to have faculty guests Parveen Wahid, Nazanin Rahnavard, and Gita Sukthankar.  Neela Balkaran, our Professional Development Event Director, hosted the event and kicked off the discussion by asking each faculty member to explain what attracted them to working in academia.  After that the floor was open for all students to ask questions.

It was a valuable experience for all who attended.  We were especially happy to hear the faculty members express the importance of participating in communities such as Women in EECS as a way to support and encourage women in the field of computing.

We hope to see you at the next professional event: Resume Workshop with Mock Interviews on Thursday, October 2nd from 4pm-5pm! Keep checking our Events page for details.

Friday’s Fall Kick-Off Event

Hey WEECSers,
Thank you to everyone who showed up to last Friday’s Fall Kick-Off meeting. We had an awesome turn out despite bad weather. President McKenna Reed lead the evening with a Marvel/DC themed ice breaker game based on rock/paper/scissors. What a creative way to get people talking to each other!

Andres took first place in the ice breaker game and got to select an item of his choosing from the prize table.
After the ice breaker, refreshments were served and McKenna gave a presentation introducing the WEECS club. Some important takeaways from the presentation:
  • WEECS exists to foster community and support women in technology.
  • To be involved with WEECS attend our events!
  • Upcoming events this semester: Game Night, Movie Night, Stargazing, Professional Development Events (resume/interview workshops), Volunteer Opportunities, Halloween Party, and more.
At the end of the meeting all prizes were raffled off with most everyone walking away with something. Prizes included sweatshirts, t-shirts, and tech swag.
Thanks again to everyone who came to the meeting. We hope to see you all again very soon!
