The UCF Women in Engineering
Student Affinity Group held their first kick off on Tuesday, November 13 at
the new Harris Engineering Center at UCF. Over twenty undergraduate and graduate
students attended. The students and UCF WIE advisor, Dr. Parveen Wahid, welcomed
special guest speaker, Mary Ellen Randall, 2006 National WIE Committee Chair.
The event started off with a welcoming message from Dr. Wahid. She introduced
to everyone what WIE is, its mission, and its meaning to the students. It
was followed by a short presentation by UCF WIE president, Aysenur Basagalar,
and vice-president, Shauna McCartney, who gave a brief overview of what the
students can expect from their new WIE affinity group. Afterwards, Ms. Ellen
shared with everyone some of her experiences, thoughts, and few interesting
facts and statistics on WIE. She went over the regions and different groups
around the world, a short history of WIE, women in technology and a lot more.
Throughout the presentation, the room was filled with interesting and informative
discussions whether it was on women around the world or women in the workplace.
Also, refreshments and drinks were served during the event. Meanwhile, for
the two officers, Dr. Wahid, and Ms. Ellen, the night continued with a delightful
dinner and nice conversations.
